Habit Stacking

Lately, I’ve been trying to establish a better morning routine. I wanted to establish a bunch of new habits. However, as you may know, forming new habits can be hard for anyone. Habit stacking has been a super helpful tool for me as a student. I hope you find this skill helpful.

Habit stacking is a term I was first introduced to in AP Psychology. The best way to learn new habits is to build on your existing habits. Pair the habit you want to form with a habit that you already do. For example, if you want to meditate for 5 every minutes every day, pair it with a habit that you already do like checking the news. Whenever you check the news, immediately meditate afterwards.

This anchors your new habit to a stimulus that already exists. The routine will become more memorable as you continue to practice it. Instead of just saying that you’ll do it, you are grouping it with something you already do which makes you more likely to do it. Current research suggests it only takes 21-40 days to form a habit so the more practice you get, the better!

I hope some of you guys will try this and find it useful. Tell me what you guys think! Hope you have a great weekend!

Anushka Agrawal
