Hey guys! Today, we will be talking about judging people by appearance. This post is actually part 1 of a special collab with Ebullience. This blog post will delve into why it happens. However, I strongly encourage you to also check out the post on their blog which will discuss the effects on judging people by appearance. Please check out their other posts. They discuss some very important topics!
I think that there are definitely many different factors contributing to this habit. But my personal thought is that we are taught to do it. How many times do you watch a movie or a TV show and in the first minute, identify who the bad guy was? Even before any plot development has happened. And most of the time, chances are that you were probably right. Take, for instance, the Little Mermaid. If you were to see pictures of Ariel and Ursula right next to each other, and you had to pick the good guy and the bad guy, there is a HUGE chance you would pick Ariel as good and Ursula as bad. Then, the movie tells us that our assumptions were right. This leads us to believe that this method does indeed work, so we keep using it. Think about every single time first impressions have mattered. Interviews, presentations, meeting new people, etc. In some ways, it almost works as a defense mechanism. Our mind subconsciously does this to avoid possibly getting “hurt.”
Like I said earlier, we grew up in a society that has mentally trained us to judge other people. Whether you like it or not, we all subconsciously do it. The best you can do is try to move past those thoughts. Don’t blame yourself. If you were conditioned to believe something for a long time, it will take a long time to undo it. Just don’t blame yourself and make an effort to change.
Hope you guys liked this! Be sure to check out Ebullience’s post as well!
